Eligibility Requirements for PRA-AB
✅ 1. Exams Required

MCCQE Part 1 (Pass required) or
USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3 (Alberta is one of the few provinces that accept the full USMLE series).
No NAC OSCE required, making it more accessible for IMGs.
TDM Exam (Therapeutic Decision-Making) is required but by invitation only after passing the initial screening.
✅ 2. Immigration Status

PR or Canadian Citizenship is preferred, but Alberta may consider applicants without PR on a case-by-case basis.
✅ 3. Recent Clinical Practice Requirement

You must have at least one year of clinical practice in the last three years.
Unlike British Columbia (which requires only 960 hours in 3 years), Alberta requires a full 12 months of recent clinical practice.
Clinical assistant roles do NOT count toward this requirement.
Fellowships are NOT considered practice for this assessment.
✅ 4. Postgraduate Training Requirement

You must have completed at least two years of postgraduate training (internship alone is not enough).
This can be:
Residency (2 years of family medicine training) OR
Internship + 1 additional year of residency or structured postgraduate training.
✅ 5. No Independent Practice Requirement

Unlike other provinces, Alberta does NOT require prior independent practice experience.
Recent residency graduates can apply immediately after finishing their program.
However, you must apply within two years of completing residency if you have not yet practiced independently.
