Lucas's 2006 Ford Focus with the 2.0L was towed in after being stranded on the side of the road with a flat battery as the alternator had failed. Without the alternator maintaining charge and running all the electric, the load was running on the battery only until the voltage was depleted far enough the ECM was unable to run the engine.
Lucas had reported the “little red battery light was on from yesterday”. This is the charge fault indicator.
Replacement is simple but fiddly on most vehicles.
It also pays to shop around. Wreckers were asking around $200 with 1 to 3 months warranty, parts suppliers were between $580 and $920 for new parts and a local auto electrician quoted $880 supply and fit. I was able to get a new aftermarket with 2 year warranty on eBay for just under $300 delivered!! (All prices AUD at time of purchase)
