In this episode, make and affix the Gunwales (or Gunnels), the pieces of timber around the shear line of the boat.
These are made from ash, scarph-jointed to get the required length. The inwales (the inner gunwales) have blocks of black walnut to space them away from the hull, creating scuppers. This adds strength, allows any water to be drained out more easily, and creates locations any gear or equipment can be easily tied into the canoe.
