Join Grant & Angie as they look at MANFRED MANN: 1962 - 1969
Manfred Mann was an influential English rock band formed in London in 1962 by South African-born keyboardist Manfred Mann (real name Michael Lubowitz), who had fled apartheid and adopted his pseudonym after jazz drummer Shelly Manne; alongside drummer and keyboardist Mike Hugg, they initially assembled the Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers, a jazz-blues ensemble that evolved into the self-titled Manfred Mann, blending R&B, pop, and jazz influences during the British Invasion. With early members including vocalist Paul Jones (1962–1966), guitarist Mike Vickers, bassist Dave Richmond, and later Mike d'Abo on vocals (1966–1969), the band scored major UK and US hits like "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" (1964), "Pretty Flamingo" (1966), and Bob Dylan's "The Mighty Quinn" (1968), amassing over a dozen chart-toppers while incorporating brass sections and harmonic experimentation. Frustrated by their pop image and commercial constraints, the group disbanded in 1969, paving the way for Mann's subsequent ventures in jazz-rock fusion with Manfred Mann Chapter Three (1969–1971) and the enduring Manfred Mann's Earth Band (1971–present), which shifted toward progressive rock and synth-heavy covers, including their iconic 1976 rendition of Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light."
