The BBC announced 1,800 to 2,000 job cuts on April 15th. The licence fee went up to £180 in the same month. And the new Director General is a former Google executive.
And I think that last detail tells you everything about where this is all heading.
The BBC is cutting staff while simultaneously launching more than fifty YouTube channels — making content specifically and exclusively for a free platform, owned by the company its new boss used to run.
At the same time, it's asking you to pay a compulsory household tax to fund it.I called the BBC a cultural dinosaur a few weeks ago. I didn't think they'd prove me quite so quickly. In this video I argue that the BBC's move to YouTube doesn't save the licence fee — it destroys the argument for it.
Because if you're competing on a free platform on exactly the same terms as everyone else, the case for a mandatory £180 a year stops making any sense at all.
