If you want to be a serious investor, you need to be able to read financial statements. Here is a quick overview of the important SEC filings investors should be aware of.
First is the 10-K, this is the annual report public companies file with the SEC. It includes a lot of information about the financials, the company's business, and much more.
Next up is the 10-Q, which is their quarterly report with the SEC. This is like a "condensed" version of the 10-K.
8-K filings are also important - which is any news that could impact the company's stock price (think news releases).
Then there's also the Proxy Statement (DEF-14A), which includes a lot of information about the company's executives, including compensation and share ownership.
Finally there are the Form 4's. These detail changes in executives' share ownership.
