Nearly a decade ago I recorded these incredible Minangkabau women playing talempong pacik, handheld interlocking gongs, in Silantai, West Sumatra. One of the only matrilineal societies in Indonesia, the Minangkabau of West Sumatra have some of the most virtuosic gong music of the archipelago, much of it played by women. While handheld (pacik) talempong is played by both men and women, these women also specialize in the talempong duduak (sitting talempong) or talempong Unggan (Unggan style talempong), wherein the gongs are laid in a row and played by two sitting musicians. The handheld version, with the melody split between three musicians holding five gongs, is most commonly played in processions accompanying local weddings.
The musicians are Yasmalena, Rosmainar, Erno Delita, Hilda Yeni, and Rosmani
