Won’t go easy on CM: Gambegre MLA Mehtab Chandee Sangma flags healthcare crisis in Meghalaya

A clip from the recent Meghalaya Assembly session has gone viral, showing Gambegre MLA Mehtab Chandee Sangma putting pointed questions to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who is also her husband. The moment drew attention online, with many praising her for not holding back during Question Hour.

Reacting to the buzz, the MLA from Gambegre said she was prepared to press for answers. “When he stood up to take the question, I was thinking… I would have to put up much tougher questions,” she said, adding, “Not at all,” when asked if she would go easy on the Chief Minister. “We discuss a lot of things but not the supplementary questions.”

During the session, Mehtab, a doctor by profession, raised concerns about the shortage of doctors and specialists in Meghalaya. She said that while the government is investing in infrastructure and equipment, the shortage of human resources remains a major challenge.

“If you look at our health care system, the government is trying to do its bit to improve infrastructure and equipment. But when it comes to manpower, we are still lacking a lot,” she said.

“Unless we resolve the manpower issue, no matter how much infrastructure you put in, we will not be able to give the required services,” The MLA added.

Sangma called for a proper assessment of the existing healthcare setup to identify deficiencies and address them systematically. She also highlighted the reluctance of doctors to serve in remote areas.

“It’s not just one factor. Facilities are scattered and some are in remote areas. Specialists prefer towns because they have families and need schooling for their children,” she said, adding that amenities in rural areas must improve to retain medical professionals.

She stressed that addressing the healthcare crisis requires a comprehensive approach, not isolated measures.
