We are potentially walking into a mental health catastrophe due to the secondary manifestations of Coronavirus, that could be more damaging and kill more people. At present we are in the fight & flight mode, trying to survive by not catching Coronavirus.

Mental health is determined by socioeconomic and environmental factors. Correlation between change in suicide rate and income inequality after the break up of Soviet Union is often quoted.
The poorest in society usually get hit the hardest. Generally the more debt people have the worse their mental health. Also the health resources of nations are dependant on GDP, so if their economy does badly there is less money for health services.
Risk factors include -
Poverty, deprivation, high debt;
Unemployment, job insecurity, job stress;
Abuse in families;
Alcohol and drugs abuse.
The long-term health effects of economic crises depend on -
Economic measure applied to reduce unemployment & debt relief programmes;
Family support programmes to reduce abuse, support children and prevent breakup of families;
Control of alcohol price and availability.
Mental health services need to be more fully resourced, accessible and affordable, and be prepared for the future wave of morbidity and mortality after Coronavirus has been defeated.
