অবরুদ্ধ কাবা: হিজরি ১৪০০ সালের শুরু হয় প্রথম মাস মহররমের ১ তারিখে। ইংরেজি ক্যালেন্ডারে দিনটি ছিল ১৯৭৯ সালের ২০ নভেম্বর। ভোর ৫টা ২৫ মিনিটে কাবা চত্বরে (মসজিদে আল হারাম) ফজরের নামাজ আদায়রত কয়েক হাজার মুসল্লি হঠাৎ করে শুনতে পান গুলির শব্দ। মুহূর্তে এলোপাতাড়ি গুলিতে প্রাণ কেড়ে নেয় কয়েক মুসল্লির। আহতদের আর্তনাদে ভারী হয়ে ওঠে মক্কার বাতাস। মসজিদের উপরের তলা এবং মিনার থেকে বাইরের সাধারণ মানুষকে লক্ষ করেও গুলি ছুড়তে থাকে আক্রমণকারীরা। তাদের অন্যতম দাবি ছিল সৌদি রাজপরিবারকে উচ্ছেদ করা। এ ছাড়াও তারা দাবি করে যে, ইসলামের ত্রাণকর্তা হিসেবে বিবেচিত ইমাম মেহেদি তাদের নেতা হিসেবে আবির্ভূত হয়েছেন, যার নাম আবদুল্লা আল কাহতানি। তার নির্দেশেই এই আক্রমণ এবং সবার উচিত তাদের সঙ্গে যোগ দেওয়া।
