This video features Dr. Peter Yoo, a Doctor of Dental Surgery and the owner and lead dentist at The Tooth Doctor, a multi-location dental practice serving Edmonton and surrounding communities.
Dr. Yoo graduated from the University of Alberta in 2003 and opened his first dental practice in 2009 in the Capilano area of Edmonton. Since then, The Tooth Doctor has expanded to include:
A second location in Tofield, serving patients east of Edmonton
A third location in South Edmonton (Ellerslie), near Blackmud Creek, Fulton, and Rutherford
Across all locations, The Tooth Doctor has built its reputation on patient trust, continuity of care, and a commitment to doing what is genuinely best for the patient.
About This Video – Most Dentists Get This Wrong
In this interview, Dr. Peter Yoo shares the history of The Tooth Doctor and explains how his approach to dentistry has evolved through experience, learning, and patient care.
Dr. Yoo discusses his philosophy of serving the community by continually growing his skill set, allowing more procedures to be completed in-house rather than referring patients out. This approach helps patients stay in a familiar environment and builds comfort and trust, even for complex procedures such as difficult root canals that are often sent to specialists.
A central theme of the conversation is conservative treatment. Dr. Yoo explains that early in his career, tooth pain often led him to consider root canals. Over time, he discovered that in approximately 80 percent of cases, toothaches or sensitivity are caused by an imbalance in the patient’s bite, not irreversible nerve damage.
By carefully checking how the teeth come together during biting and grinding, and making a small adjustment when needed, the pressure on the tooth can be relieved. This allows the irritated nerve to calm down naturally—similar to how a bruise heals when it is no longer being pressed. In many cases, this simple adjustment resolves pain without invasive or costly treatment.
Dr. Yoo explains that pulling a tooth is the worst possible outcome, followed by unnecessary root canals. His goal is always to find the simplest and most effective solution to get patients out of pain while preserving their natural teeth whenever possible.
Patients are often surprised—and relieved—when pain is resolved through a straightforward bite adjustment instead of a more aggressive procedure they were expecting.
The conversation also touches on Google reviews and reputation. Dr. Yoo expresses sincere appreciation for patients who leave five-star reviews, noting how meaningful they are to the entire team. He acknowledges that while occasional one-star reviews exist, they often stem from misunderstandings and encourages open communication so concerns can be addressed directly.
This video offers valuable insight for anyone looking for a dentist in Edmonton who prioritizes patient comfort, honesty, and conservative care over unnecessary procedures.
