Dr. Elsa Soro, a research professor at IDITUR - Ostelea, talks about the rise of dark tourism, the plurality of its forms and the profile of the tourists related to this phenomenon. Dark tourism refers to the interest to travel to places related to death, tragedy or catastrophes. This practice is carried out since the Middle Ages but, after the success of the series "Chernobyl" has increased the number of people who prefer this way of travelling.
From Ostelea we anticipate this trend. The dark tourist is attracted to visit sites associated with historical tragedies, cemeteries, haunted houses, abandoned places or cities that have suffered natural disasters, like hurricanes or earthquakes.

We can't forget other well-known destinations, such as Auschwitz, Birkenau or Cambodian killing fields. In Spain, dark tourism is associated with the Civil War and historical memory.
