The atmosphere is extravagant, yet no one seems to know much about their mysterious host, leading to wild rumors about his past.

Nick eventually meets Gatsby, who surprises him with his friendly, unassuming demeanor. Unlike the flamboyant image suggested by his wealth, Gatsby is polite and earnest.
