Our dog, Maya, is a Belgian Malinois mix we rescued from a local shelter. Maya does not like any loud noises - gunfire, pots and pans falling, people yelling, and especially thunderstorms.
We live in Colorado and afternoon thunderstorms are a regular occurrence in the Spring and Summer. We've tried other remedies before such as herbal supplements and aroma therapy (pheromone based), which each had mixed results, but the only thing that has worked consistently has been her kennel, and her ThunderShirt.
We've used the ThunderShirt in a variety of circumstances. It has been especially handy when traveling since we don't always have her kennel with us.
We had heard about the ThunderShirt long before we got one, and it wasn't until we tested the theory that we knew it would be a good idea to help with her anxiety.
One afternoon, when a storm was brewing and Maya began to tremble and shake, we simply gave her a hug. Holding her tight immediately calmed her down. If we released the pressure of the hug, she would begin to tremble again, even though we were right there and she was still in our arms.
We got the ThunderShirt as a gift from her Aunt Kristy. She even had Maya's name embroidered on the side to customize it.
Now, whenever Maya begins to get anxious, or we know she will soon be in an anxiety-inducing circumstance, we will put her ThunderShirt on her.
We are also careful to not use the ThunderShirt only when there is likely to be a stressful situation. We didn't want her associating the ThunderShirt with something scary about to happen. So from time to time, when we know it's just going to be a regular relaxing day, we'll put it on her for a couple of hours.
She does not mind wearing the ThunderShirt, and it doesn't impede her range or motion, or make using the restroom difficult, etc. We teasingly call it her 'tactical vest' since she looks like a police dog, and we don't want to make her feel like the big baby she really is.
