Its been a couple of years, so I thought I was long overdue a trip back to the notorious island of Madeira and Funchal Airport! I had the pleasure of flying with Monarch this time onboard one of their A321's and I have to say I quite impressed. Generous amounts of legroom in all seats. Knees not touching the seat in front is always a good thing and as always with Monarch very friendly crew and a nice clean interior. Flight was fairly busy but by no means full, there was a few empty seats dotted around, lots of people heading away for a Spring break somewhere a little warmer than the UK. And just a little warmer it was, only 16 degrees when we arrived reaching 19 during the afternoon. Actually quite similar temperatures to what's been reached in the UK a few days prior to this.
A particularly grey, dull morning in Gatwick not raining but very overcast. A long taxi down to Runway 08R at the far end then departure to the East followed by a left turn taking us right round, back on ourselves towards Southampton and the channel. Some great views of Gatwick airport as we pass back round. Once out of British airspace the overcast skies began to clear up offering some great views of France & Spain around the Bay of Biscay and the Atlantic coast. Before a rather grey descent over Porto Santo and round onto Madeira's notorious Runway 05 approach which requires the aircraft to fly in parallel to the runway before doing a tight right hand U turn all the way round, along the rugged coastline of the island and onto the runway!
