The front-facing lens of your phone is great for taking quick selfies, or if you want to shoot a quick video for social media. But there are typically two lenses on your phone and you may be wondering 'which lens should I use'.
A lot of folks will advise you to use that front-facing lens because it helps with framing yourself in the shot - and it does. But I'd argue that there are often downsides that outweigh that benefit.
First, the front-facing lens is often a wider angle than the rear-facing lens, which can be useful at times but will not usually give the most flattering result, especially if you want a close-up. In addition, it will often shoot at a lower maximum resolution than the rear-facing lens, which can lead to poorer image quality if you decide to crop in while editing.
There's another reason, though. The screen on your phone can be a major distraction - it can catch the eye while you're recording and it can become obvious to the viewer that you're not looking straight down the lens at them. This can make your viewer less engaged with your video and more likely to click away.
So, whenever I'm asked 'which lens should I use', I reply, unless there's a real requirement for using the front-facing lens, the rear-facing lens should be your go-to.
