While filming the trash compactor scene for Episode 4, Mark Hamill burst a blood vessel in his eye while making himself red-faced. All subsequent shots were setup to hide the left side of his face.
The Empire Strikes Back
In Episode 5 Han Solo was frozen in carbonite and taken away by Boba Fett. This was not just for plot reasons. Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill had both signed on for three Star Wars films, while Harrison Ford only signed for two. In case he did not return, George Lucas needed a way to write Solo out of the story.
Return Of The Jedi
The original ending of Episode 6 was much darker. Not only was Han going to die in the raid on the Death Star bunker, after killing Darth Vader the plan was for Luke to take his mask, turn to the Dark Side and rule the galaxy.
