We compared the real take-home salary of a PGY3 (Postgraduate Year 3) junior doctor working in:
• NHS England (UK)
• New South Wales (Australia)
• Queensland (Australia)
This video is based on actual payslips from November 2025 and focuses purely on what lands in your bank account, not advertised base salaries.
🔍 What we compared:
Same training level: PGY3
UK: ST1 / CT1 / SHO
Australia: SRMO (NSW) / SHO (QLD)
Same month: November 2025
Net (take-home) pay, not gross
Real working patterns and deductions
⚠️ Important context:
The NHS payslip shown has opted out of the NHS pension
(Many doctors will have pension deductions — this will change take-home pay)
NSW take-home includes salary packaging
Queensland example does NOT include salary packaging
Hours, rosters, and penalties vary between hospitals and individual.
📌 Key takeaway:
This video is not saying Australia always pays more or less than the UK.
At junior levels (PGY2–PGY3), take-home pay can look closer than expected depending on state, rosters, and deductions.
However, at registrar and consultant levels, Australia generally pays significantly more than the UK — something we’ll cover in future videos.
🎯 Who this video is for:
UK doctors considering Australia
IMGs planning PLAB / AMC pathways
Anyone tired of salary hype and wants real numbers
