At home, says the little girl
We raise an elephant,
On Sundays his eye shines
When daddy paints it white.

At home, says the little boy
We raise a turtle,
She sings songs
In Latin and lettuce.

At home, says the little girl
Our dishes are made of gold,
When you eat lentils
You think you're eating a treasure.

At home, says the little boy
We have a soup tureen
Straight from Soissons
When Clovis was a notary.

At home, says the little girl
My grandmother is a hundred thousand years old
She still plays marbles
While she picks her teeth.

At home, says the little boy
My grandfather has a beard
Full, full of finches
That reeks of rhubarb

At home, says the little girl
There are three fireplaces
And when the fire fizzes
It's warm on three sides.

At home, says the little boy
There's a train every midnight
When I wake up, my shorts
All smeared with soot.

At home, says the little girl
The Pope comes to confession
He drinks chamomile tea
After he's been spanked.

At home, says the little boy
Lives a Chinese emperor
He sleeps on the mat
As well as an Iroquois

Iroquois, says the little girl:
You've got to be kidding me!
If I find my needle
I'll prick your finger.

What it's like to be a girl
replied the little boy
You're dumb as an eel
Stupid as a sausage.

I'm the one who took the Bastille
When you were in the onions
But to such a keel
I'll say no more
