The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) was a 23rd century Federation "Enterprise (Mark II)" refit Constitution-class starship in service to Starfleet, and the first Federation starship to bear the name Enterprise. While the Enterprise historically as a whole served as the Federations flagship from 2245 to 2285. This specific refit iteration was in service from 2256 to 2265, later being retrofitted and with a more basic look while transferred to the command of James T. Kirk.

The Enterprise at initial construction was one of twelve basic heavy cruiser-type starships, the Constitution-class, was commissioned by UFP Starfleet initially for basic long term exploration and research. Constructed at the San Francisco Fleet Yards in San Francisco, California, the Federation vessel registered NCC-1701 was christened "the Enterprise" in a long line of ships of the same name.

Captain Robert April oversaw construction of the ship's original base components as well as its initial trial runs. His wife, Sarah, designed several tools for the ship's sickbay. Larry Marvick was one of the designers of the Enterprise itself, while Doctor Richard Daystrom designed its computer systems.

During its construction a small piece of the Enterprise NX-01 was installed into one of the ships sections as it was tradition to place a piece of the last ship to bear the same name into its decendant vessel. - fandom
