Power Outage Prep: Here’s How I Stay Ready ⬇️
When I bought a butchered half cow this season, the first question I got was, “What if the power goes out?” It’s a legitimate concern! The power can go out for many reasons and it would be a shame to waste this beautiful meat.
This is a reminder of how important food storage is!
For me, preparation means using multiple ways to preserve food. Relying only on a freezer isn’t realistic—if the power goes out for too long, your food could spoil, and that’s both time and money down the drain.
This actually happened to a friend over the winter and they ended up giving me all of the meat from their freezer for my dogs. So sad but went to good use!
While generators can help, they’re not my go-to. They work in short-term emergencies, but they aren’t a sustainable long-term solution for my homestead.
Instead, I focus on making my food shelf-stable. As soon as my freezer is stocked, I start canning. I preserve things like stews, chilis, soups, ribs, and ground meat. I also freeze-dry meals like spaghetti with meat sauce, lasagna, and hearty soups. These methods ensure my food is safe, even if the power fails.
My goal is simple: I want to stop relying on power or outside companies to store my food. By using a mix of preservation techniques, I create multiple backup systems.
Freeze-drying for long-term storage and canning for shelf-stable, ready-to-eat meals. Freezing is for short-term, convenient storage, never long term for me!
The secret is variety—it’s the key to being prepared for anything. This gives me not only more security but peace of mind.
What do you think?
