Quick highlights of a 90 minute tutorial: 21 different Lunge Punches, based on the principles of the 5 most practiced Animal styles from Fujian China (the area that heavily influenced the development of karate).
Why would we have 21 ways to execute a lunge punch?
1. Everyone has different physical traits. Some will resonate with your body better. This includes the footwork, body movement, even the Zanshin component.
2. Lunge punches can have different goals:
To finish an opponent (Ikken Hisatsu - one strike, finish).
To sting (stun) an opponent, creating an opportunity for a follow up power shot.
To elicit a flinch response, creating a window of opportunity to attack.
To enter safely and seize (control your opponent)
3. Having the same Lunge means an opponent can predict your movements and establish a successful plan to beat you. Winning the first point with a lunge punch is great. But if your opponent is going to score on you every time you throw it from then on, its not a great technique.
4. Every opponent is different. You lunge punch may fall right into their comfort zone. Our goal is always to be unpredictable, and equally, to find a strategy that leads to success.
Some cover more ground
Some fire from unusual positions
Some are designed to intimidate your opponent
Some are designed to subdue or calm your opponent
Some are designed to distract your opponent
Some are designed to destabilise your opponent
etc
Remember: Any technique will work for you if you work for it.
This video merely shows each technique, our OnlineDojo has countless tutorials on the footwork, set up and psychology of each technique (and many more).
