For science teachers. The "acid test" is one of dropping cold, dilute (10%), hydrochloric acid (HCl) on a mineral or rock. A positive, vigorous reaction indicates most commonly the presence of the mineral calcite (CaCO3). The acid test here is applied to a slab of granite, in which can be clearly seen coarse crystals of pink and white felspar, gray quartz, and some black biotite mica. The lack of reaction indicates the lack of calcite.
