🎛️ Audio captured using a combination of iPhone voice memo and the recording from the Sony ZV-1 camera. The Sony ZV-1 was lowered 11.9 dB below initial recording level -- I did this because its overly-compressed sound does not demonstrate a natural dynamic range, but does capture some of the frequencies that are important for reflecting accurate resonance in the voice. This combined audio was then imported in Logic Pro X, where I used a combination of EQ and Izotope RX 11 to remove extreme background noise coming from an industrial-grade air conditioning unit (alas, this doesn't work so well during quiet moments, especially noticeable right at the start of this piece). I then used a secondary EQ to recover the important frequencies in the voice that were removed from those processes. From there, I sent the sound to two busses: 1) Chroma-Verb to add ever-so-slight atmosphere to the room, and 2) Infected Mushroom's plug-in called "Wider" that creates a nicer stereoscopic image of the sound without boosting the overall signal (it can do this, but the audio was sent to this bus at -16 dB). Lastly, I used a Fab-Filter Pro-L limiter to add 3dB of overall signal to the final sound. The result of all this is a usable, full-sounding audio that, in my professional opinion, is closely representative of the true sound with far less background noise. Hooray for audio engineering! Recommendation: Don't record next to a gargantuan AC unit, and use something way better than an iPhone and camera audio so you don't have to do any of this wizardry to salvage the recordings.
