Parts of Western Australia will head into a five-day lockdown after Premier Mark McGowan extraordinarily announces the state has detected a COVID-19 outbreak coming out of hotel quarantine in Perth.
As a result of the positive case, the premier has announced a “full lockdown” beginning at 6pm on Sunday night and ending at 6pm on Friday for the Perth Metropolitan, Peel, and south west regions.
The man who tested positive worked at a hotel quarantine facility which housed four COVID-19 cases including the South African and UK variants.
The positive cases’ close household contacts have been taken to a state-run quarantine facility where they will isolate for 14 days.
Premier Mark McGowan said the positive case most likely has contracted the “highly transmissible UK variant” with genome sequencing currently underway to confirm.
“A five-day lockdown, it is crucial reaction to keep the community safe,” Mr McGowan said.
Under the new full lockdown there are only four reasons to leave one’s home which include essential shopping, medical or healthcare needs – including compassionate requirements – exercise for only one hour with one other person, and work if you cannot work at home.
Masks will also be mandatory for people who do leave at home, and for those who do attend work, masks will be mandatory there too.
Included in the lockdown measures is the closure of schools in the affected areas which were due to reopen on Monday.
"For a majority of schools, school was due to start tomorrow. That has now been put on hold, and schools will be closed until next week, following the lock down measures," the premier said.
