The McKinsey 7S Framework is a management model that helps organizations assess and align seven internal elements to improve performance or navigate change.
The seven elements are: Strategy, Structure, Systems, Shared Values, Style, Staff, and Skills. They are divided into “hard” elements (Strategy, Structure, Systems) and “soft” elements (Shared Values, Style, Staff, Skills).
At the core are Shared Values, which influence all others. The idea is that for an organization to function well, all seven elements must be aligned and mutually supportive.
It’s used during organizational change, mergers, cultural shifts, or performance improvement initiatives. Leaders, consultants, and HR teams use the 7S Framework to identify misalignments, clarify roles and processes, and ensure that structure and culture support the company’s strategic goals. It promotes a holistic, balanced approach to organizational effectiveness.
