✅ What the documentary is really about
The 39-year-old actress appears in "Silenced," a documentary about the weaponization of defamation laws against abuse survivors. Speaking with director Selina Miles, Amber makes a heartbreaking admission: "This is not about me. I have lost my ability to speak. I am not here to tell my story. I don't want to tell my story. In fact, I don't want to use my voice anymore. That's the problem."
Amber reflects on the aftermath of both the UK trial against The Sun newspaper and the 2022 U.S. defamation trial with Johnny Depp, 62. She recalls thinking that public backlash would "make this point more obvious," but admits: "I didn't understand it could get so much worse for me as a woman, using my voice."
The documentary, which also features international human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson and stories of other women who've faced retaliation for speaking out, explores what happens when "women speak out" and "powerful systems move to discredit and punish them."
Despite her struggles, Amber says she finds inspiration in other women who continue to fight, stating: "It gives me strength seeing other people take on the fight. Women brave enough to address the imbalance of power." As a mother to twins Ocean and Agnes, and daughter Oonagh Paige, she's motivated by creating a better world for her daughters.
FULL TRIAL RECAP: After splitting in 2016, Depp sued Heard for defamation in 2019 over her 2018 Washington Post op-ed. In 2022, after a six-week trial, Heard was found liable and ordered to pay over $10 million. They eventually settled for $1 million.
