This piece is part of our larger chambre work titled “Suite pittoresque,” a collection of 22 original pieces each inspired by a classical painting, accompanied by an original French-language poem. The movements are placed in an order to abstractly represent the ark of human civilization.
This piece is the seventh in the suite. It represents the division of man by the emergence of differing cultures through the biblical tale of the Tower of Babel. It is also the only movement in the entire collection that the composers collaborated on, reinforcing the symbolism behind it; ironically, it came very close to never being completed for that exact reason.
“Through this Suite, with its variety of scenes, characters, events, and worlds depicted, we, the Authors and Composers, have attempted to stick the quill to the bow to imitate the brush and thus pay homage to the infinite forms of Art.”
— Preface to the Suite.
