The More You Know, the Faster You Run.
You need to know Omega-3 if you are a runner - especially when it comes to inflammation and heart health.
Omega-3 are essential fatty acids - just like vitamins are essential nutrients. Like calcium helps to build bones, omega-3s help to build nervous system tissue (e.g. brain and nerve cells) and cell membranes. Additionally, omega-3's are helpful at reducing triglyceride levels and inhibiting inflammatory substances, which help heart health and keep body inflammation low, respectively.
Supplementing Omega-3s makes a lot of practical sense. To obtain the recommended daily allowance of Omega-3, you would need to eat 3 servings of fish per week. However, most people are simply not eating this much fish.
And, vegan and vegetarian runners are simply not eating fish - nonetheless supplementing with fish oil.
There are two potential solutions as outline in this video. The first involves cooking with a certain type of oil. The second involves going to the source of DHA/EPA in fish in the first place.
See you at the Finish Line.
