Half-Life 2 follows the events of G-Man Freeman's escape from stasis and places him on a train bound for City 17 several years after the first game, after Earth has been enslaved by the Combine's mutant forces. The player enlists Gordon to help humanity fight the Combine and their representative.The human, Dr. Wallace Breen. Breen oversees the occupation from his base of operations in the Citadel, a monolithic building in the heart of City 17. Fighting alongside Gordon is a covert resistance led by his former colleague Dr. Eli Vance, as well as other allies including Alyx Vance and the mysterious Vortigant aliens. Half-Life ends 2. In a decisive battle atop the Citadel, critical damage is inflicted on its dark fusion reactor. Just when it appears that Alex and Gordon will be engulfed by the reactor explosion, the G-Man reappears. After giving him a cryptic speech, he pulls Gordon out of danger and places him back in stasis.
