Said's novel narrates the tale of love between Ali Shervanshir, a Muslim man from Azerbaijan, and Nino Kipiani, a Christian girl from Georgia. Their passionate romance reaches a tragic conclusion as Ali loses his life while defending his homeland against the Russian Army during 1918–1920. Symbolizing their enduring bond, the statues of the two lovers gracefully move towards each other, briefly embracing, only to remain separated once again. This poignant process unfolds over a span of 10 minutes.
