The ancient tyrant Phalaris of Akragas is often associated with the infamous invention of the Brazen Bull—a hollow brass statue designed to execute victims by roasting them alive. The historical accounts surrounding this device are colored by myth and horror.

The Brazen Bull was engineered so that the victim's screams were channeled through tubes to resemble the bellowing of an enraged animal. This sound, combined with the visual of flesh blistering and bones collapsing within the glowing metal, could be seen as a grotesque spectacle of the body pushed past its limits—where human form is symbolically and literally destroyed.

Such a design implies more than execution—it suggests that Phalaris wanted to witness the body rupturing under the pressure of heat, contorting in agony, and loses all human distinction. The bull becomes not merely a tool of death, but a theater of annihilation—satisfying a tyrant's morbid desire to see the very boundaries of the human form obliterated.

There was a fascination in him, not just with cruelty, but with transformation through suffering.
