To the New Testament Church belongs a special office of service, called “Deacon.” This is a particularly important and vital role in the life of the Church as God-called and biblically qualified men serve to meet the needs of the individual members of the Church. In devoting themselves to this ministry of service, faithful Deacons free the Pastors of the Church to devote themselves to prayer and the preaching of God’s Word. When these two offices operate properly, the ministry of the Word of God increases, and the number of new disciples multiplies.

In 1 Timothy 3:8-13, Paul lists out the essential qualifications for deacons. These qualifications span the distance of three categories: personal, tested, and domestic qualities. That is, a deacon must be blameless in his character, competent in Christian doctrine, proven in Christian living, and exemplary in his family and home life.
