It is also suitable for producing large quantities of small parts. In investment casting, a mold is first made of hard, expendable material. The mold cavity is then filled with a liquid metal and allowed to cool, or hardened. This metal mixture is known as a sand bath because the mixture resembles sand. The resulting metal shell can be removed from the mold using heat and pressure or by dissolving it away with a chemical solution. There are two main types of molds: positive and negative molds. Positive molds consist of two halves that are hinged together so that they can open up like flower petals to create cavities in the interior walls for casting materials. Negative molds consist of one half with a complicated interior shape that is hinged to create cavities in the interior walls for casting materials.
