Chino, California is home to a significant Basque community that developed around a number of dairy farms owned by Basque entrepreneurs. The Chino community has not one, but two Basque clubs. The Chino Basque Club holds its annual picnic on the Sunday before Labor Day every year.
The Southern California Basque Club is the oldest club in California (1946) and holds its festival on the Sunday of Fourth of July weekend.
Basque-Americans maintain their unique culture through several traditions, and dancing is one of the more prominent. Basque-American youngsters start learning the traditional dances starting at a young age, through their local Basque clubs. There are many Basque clubs located in the Western states of California, Nevada and Idaho. Some of the dances we see here are banakoa, fandango (jota), waltz.
