At the beginning of the 20th century, King George V of the United Kingdom and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia were actually cousins!
Their mothers, Princess Alexandra of Denmark and Princess Dagmar of Denmark (later Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia), were sisters.
As seen in their photographs, they looked strikingly alike and shared a close personal relationship.
During World War I, both men found themselves fighting against their cousin, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, another relative from Europe’s interconnected royal families.
However, in 1917, the Russian Revolution broke out, and Tsar Nicholas II and his family were arrested.
Due to the political climate in Britain, King George V was unable to save his cousin and his family from execution by the Bolsheviks the following year.
