They emerged from the 19th-century Holiness movement, which itself came out of Methodism and Wesleyan sanctification teaching. Holiness gradually became associated with visible behaviors: dress codes, hair standards, jewelry restrictions, entertainment prohibitions, and strict gender roles

These practices were meant to protect moral separation, but they often moved from spiritual discipline to enforced regulation. When Pentecostal revival broke out in the early 1900s, many of its leaders came directly from these holiness churches, so those patterns came with them. BAD THEOLOGY!
