Using cloud variables in Scratch is a great way to make projects that can remember data and be interactive for all players, like global high scores, multiplayer games, or shared worlds.
However, there are some important rules and limitations you need to know first.
The Golden Rule: Who Can Use Cloud Variables?
Cloud variables are only available to Scratchers who are part of the Scratch Team's "Scratcher" group.
New Scratchers: If you just created your account, you are a "New Scratcher" and cannot create projects with cloud variables. You can, however, view and play with projects that already have them.
How to become a "Scratcher": Be an active, positive member of the community for a while by sharing projects, commenting constructively, and loving other users' work. The Scratch Team promotes accounts manually.
How to Create a Cloud Variable
If you are a Scratcher, it's easy:
Go to the Variables block category.
Click "Make a Variable".
Give your variable a name (e.g., "Global High Score").
Crucially, check the box that says "Cloud variable (stored on server)".
If you see this checkbox, congratulations! You're a Scratcher and can use cloud data. If the checkbox is missing or greyed out, you are still a New Scratcher.
Important Limitations & Rules
Cloud variables are powerful, but they are not a free-for-all. Scratch imposes strict limits to prevent abuse.
Only Numbers: Cloud variables can only store numerical values. You cannot store text (letters, words), lists, or any other type of data.
Limited Storage: A Scratch project can have a maximum of ten (10) cloud variables.
Update Speed: Cloud variables update at a limited rate to reduce server load. A project can only update cloud data at a rate that allows for 5 updates per second globally. This means:
They are not suitable for real-time motion (like moving a character for all players instantly).
They are perfect for things that don't change instantly, like scores, health points, level progress, or a vote counter.
