We turn back the clock to Summer. August 2025 in Central New York, where we find ourselves for a special moment on former Delaware & Hudson rails. This video opens with Norfolk Southern’s brand-new (at the time) SD70ACe 1080 making one of its very first trips on home territory, leading manifest train K30 (present day 30T) as it runs south through historic D&H country. The 1080’s appearance is made even more memorable by a brief stop near Oneonta — a location once home to a major Delaware & Hudson yard, where we get an extended look at the unit.
We can't help but take a brief look back at the D&H’s legacy as a vital bridge line between New England and Canada, and how these same rails continue to play an important role under Norfolk Southern today.
From there, we shift gears and head west to Norfolk Southern’s Southern Tier Line at Endwell, New York, just outside Binghamton. While this quieter main line typically sees about 6 trains a day, the afternoon delivers a decent amount of variety. Highlighted by the now abolished 309, NS 316 with the 1066 "New York Central" Heritage unit , and an unusual leader on NS K82. A classic BNSF Warbonnet — complete with original Santa Fe nose lettering — hauling frac sand for the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad.
Two different locations, one fantastic region to railfan, and a mix of modern power and historic territory come together for a memorable 2 days of railfanning across Central New York.
