Hello and welcome to this historic excursion on a destroyer of the Russian Navy. This is the Boevoy, a Sovremenny-class destroyer, of which 19 units were put into service from 1980 onwards. The basis for this consideration is this 1:700 scale model that I built many years ago. It was a commercial kit and it took me 2 days to put it together and another day to carefully paint it. The construction wasn't difficult and there are good building instructions.
These ships were 156 meters long, which means that the model is around 22 cm long. They had a displacement of around 8,000 tons and a crew of 350 men. At the time, they were developed and built in parallel to the Udaloy destroyers and had extensive armament for all possible combat scenarios. There are too many to cover here in this film. They had landing facilities for a helicopter on the aft deck, but no hangar like the Udaloy class.
These destroyers were always part of a larger battle group. I pan over a formation like this: Down here is a Udaloy class destroyer, then there is an Admiral Kuznetsov class aircraft carrier with numerous aircraft on the aircraft deck and up here we have the Boevoy again. For a model maker they are beautiful objects, but the question remains whether they really make sense for Russia.
At 156 meters long, the Boevoy is not a small ship, but if it gets caught in a real polar storm, the ship has a lot to do to stay afloat. I found this video here on YOUTUBE that shows a destroyer of this class in heavy seas. For me it is very impressive how hard the ship works in the sea and how stressed the hull is. On board, everything that is not leashed or secured will fly around.
The Boevoy entered service in 1986 and was designed for an autonomous mission of 30 days. She remained in service for 24 years and was decommissioned in 2010, quite a respectable period of service. All ships of this class are now out of service.
Otherwise I found out little about the ship. It has become a part of Russia's naval history and is unknown to most people. This is how this film ends. I thank you for taking your time and say goodbye.
