So stoked to take the SCX10 III (Base Camp) Builder's Kit out for her first trail run!
The SCX10 II Raw Builders Kit or RBK, released in 2018, was the dream ticket for a lot of us who like to start with a slider and do our own thing. It had flaws, but they were fixable, and the geometry was pure gold. Subsequent RC crawler kits, however, left it in the dust, which is why I was so excited when Axial announced the SCX10 III (Base Camp) Builder's Kit. Just like the original RBK but based on the new 10iii platform, it even has straight axles, which I adore! Of course, everyone else is running portals these days, so the question is, does it get hung up all the time. I decided to look for the worst roots and rocks I could find -- not huge mothers you can drive a shopping cart over, but nasty ones the size of your arm and head, perfect for snagging your pumpkin, AND I set out on semi-scale Pro Line Grunt tires. SPOILER: Of course, you can't glide over things like you can with portals and huge tires, but if you pick your lines carefully (which this chassis allows you to do) the new RBK is an absolute joy to drive. Fun and precise. When its underside does strike the ground, it slides nice -- pretty smooth down there. The low CG of straight axles means you can sidehill better than a truck with portals too. The turning radius is comparable to the competition -- not as tight as my Trail King with 52-degree knuckles, but okay, and the kit DOES come with a functioning DIG. For this video, the DIG is not set-up (locked out). Lastly, I have a new body on order and I just slapped on the old Willys Creep shell here. Needs bumpers too.

PROs
Quality Materials: Big bearings, delicious plastic, heavy links, sweet shocks
Smart Design
Comes with the DIG
Okay Price
Tons of body posts included to (probably) fit your old bodies
Plenty of grease, loctite, and oil included.
The tranny is whisper quiet, which I like a lot
Coupon included for 25% off a Pro Line body
The box is tiny for sneaking into the house
CONs
Instructions are pure crap. THE WORST. Axial what were you thinking???
Springs are stiff AF, and fine for heavy rigs, but I switched to lighter coils from the get-go.
DIG lockout takes some fiddling to keep it from engaging at will, as I discovered on the trail.
Body post locations will not line up with the holes in your old bodies.
