Welcome to our Bay View: Town of Lake CAPTAINS! channel, where we present episodes about the 71 lake captains that once lived in Bay View, Wisconsin, between 1878 and 1968 in the age of sail and steam on the Great Lakes.
This episode is about Captain Rudolph B. Morbeck who lived at 1302 East Idaho Street in Bay View. Among his many sailing achievements on the Great Lakes, Captain Morbeck was selected by not one, but two different titans of industry in Milwaukee – the Uihlein family when they owned Schlitz Brewing Company – and Bruno Nordberg when he owned Nordberg Manufacturing Company. As captain Rudolph Morbeck sailed these yachts for both pleasure – sailing the owners and families around the Great Lakes - and for racing where he won several awards. Also of interest is that as a crewman, Rudolph Morbeck along with his brother Charles and the Bay View owner and captain Hans Hansen all survived the sinking of Hansen’s Bay View Christmas Tree ship in northern Lake Michigan. After the yacht was raised from the bottom, Rudolph and Charles Morbeck then bought it and sailed it for several years.
We hope you enjoy this episode and if you want to learn more about Bay View's lake captains, including 60 pages of sources for this and the other episodes, visit our website at www.historicbayviewlakecaptainssociety.com or purchase our 650-page book, "Bay View: Town of Lake CAPTAINS!" currently on sale (in individual volumes) at HenschelHausBooks.com and Amazon.com. All (100%) of the proceeds from book sales go to support Bay View maritime projects identified in my first video on this channel.
