This video is a version of the first lesson I give to students who want to learn to play fiddle. It lays out the idea of the bowings in Appalachian fiddling as a rhythmic alphabet that the fiddler can use to say something with the music, an idea derived from West African drumming. The idea is that, instead of learning to bow each specific tune in a specific way, a fiddler can develop an entire rhythmic vocabulary that they can then use to play any tune in any number of ways.
The video alternates between explanations and demonstrations. The demonstrations are designed so that someone can play along and do the patterns with me, as we would do were the lesson in person.
Please feel free to contact me with any further questions through my website at www.bfslattery.com.
