No Lights, No Batteries: Exposing the Dangerous Safety Crisis in Pakistan Railways.

ملکوال کے ریلوے پھاٹکوں پر یہ تشویشناک حقیقت نوٹ کی کہ رات کے وقت روڈ ٹریفک کو انتباہ دینے والی وہ اہم لائٹس (سرخ اور سبز) غائب ہیں۔ مجھے معلوم ہوا کہ تیل سے چلنے والا پرانا نظام بند ہے اور بیٹری سے چلنے والے نئے نظام کے لیے بیٹریاں ہی میسر نہیں ہیں۔ اس پر میں نے رات کو صورتحال کا خود جائزہ لینے کا فیصلہ کیا۔ رات کے وقت میں نے دیکھا کہ گیٹ پر شدید اندھیرا تھا اور ٹریفک بغیر کسی سگنل کے خطرے سے بے نیاز آ جا رہی تھی۔ میرے علم میں آیا کہ ٹرین ڈرائیوروں کو سگنل ڈاؤن ہونے کے باوجود محض فون پر اجازت دے کر ٹرین گزاری جا رہی ہے، کیونکہ بصری سگنل(سگنل میں رکھی جانی۔ والی لائٹس) موجود ہی نہیں ھیں۔ یہ صورتحال، جہاں مسافروں کی جان کو خطرے میں ڈال کر محض فون کالز پر نظام چلایا جا رہا ہے، میرے لیے حیران کن اور پریشان کن تھی،حکومت پاکستان کو پاکستان ریلوے میں جاری اس سنگین حفاظتی غفلت کو فوری طور پر نوٹس لینا چاہیے۔۔۔۔

My day started with the usual work with my plants, where upon seeing the condition of my beautiful plants, I immediately decided that they needed to be tilled (weeded). Therefore, I planned to find someone for this job in the next day or two. However, after making this decision and stepping outside, I encountered a problem far more serious than personal matters and one related to the public safety of the country.
​At the railway crossing in Malakwal, I noted the alarming fact that the crucial lights (red and green) that warn road traffic at night were missing. I learned that the old oil-based system has been shut down, and batteries are not available for the new battery-operated system. Upon learning this, I decided to assess the situation myself at night. At the crossing, I observed intense darkness, with traffic moving through, heedless of the danger, without any signal.
​I came to know that train drivers are being allowed to pass the signal merely with permission over the phone, even after the signal is 'down,' because the visual signals (the lights meant to be placed inside the signal) are absent. This situation, where the system is run on mere phone calls, putting passengers' lives at risk, was both surprising and deeply disturbing for me. The Government of Pakistan must immediately take notice of this severe safety negligence ongoing in Pakistan Railways."
