“I suppose the next step is to look at, what do we see in terms of Appalachia's transition from being totally dependent upon coal mining? And that's the…greatest challenge I think we have in the mountains today, in the mountains of Southern Appalachia. What do we do next? Particularly when you have people who for 150 years have never done anything else.” - Dr. Bill Turner, Berea College, Distinguished Professor of Black and Appalachian Studies (Retired).
In this two-part video series, Appalachia Service Project examines the decline of the coal industry in Eastern Kentucky since the 1970s, and the resilience of a community that is determined to call Appalachia home.
Part one explores Lynch, KY, the history of the coal industry and US Steel in this community, and the lasting impact coal mining has had in the region.
Part two explores the idea of a house and a home in Appalachia, and celebrates the successful economic growth in communities like Hazard, KY.
