Take one lap around Mazda Raceway and watch Brian work the pedals of his Spec Miata. Video starts coming out of T11 onto the front straight. Watch his unusual "dance" of left foot braking followed by heel/toe downshift followed again by more left foot braking as he transitions from left foot braking into the corner.
The little taps with the left foot while under full throttle are designed to reset the brake pads against the rotors as we approach a heavy braking zone. Aggressively driving over the curbs and rumblestrips can cause "pad knockback" which creates a small gap between the brake pads and rotors. Without the little taps, the initial application of the pedal can be weak and inconsistent so these little taps help ensure we always have a hard pedal before heavy brake zones.
