Metazachlor forms the foundation of over 90% of winter oilseed rape weed control programmes and is a key active ingredient for the crop; but in common with some other major herbicides, it’s been detected in watercourses at levels that risk non-compliance with the Water Framework Directive (WFD), the EU legislation drawn up to protect all surface and ground waters.
BASF and Adama have joined forces on a European basis to develop stewardship guidelines specifically for metazachlor to try and mitigate against this threat and build on the general best practice advice within the Voluntary Initiative (VI).
Metazachlor Matters is the new initiative that is calling on advisors and growers to take action by finding out if land is at risk and to follow the new guidelines to the letter.
The drive is focused on agronomic best practice and changing on-farm practices to maintain the long term availability of metazachlor.
