Описание: Madge Dorita Walters was born on April 28, 1938, in Kingston, Jamaica. She began participating in school plays and by the age of 11, she won every voice competition she entered. However, a career in acting wasn’t realistic to her at the time.

After graduating from Shortwood Teacher Training College, in Kingston, Madge married Royston Sinclair and they had two sons named Wayne and Garry. Royston was a police officer and Madge began teaching English and Drama to 7–15-year-olds.

By the age of 30, Madge Sinclair decided to go to New York to pursue acting, leaving her family behind in Jamaica. She and her husband divorced a year later, and her sons remained in Jamaica with their father. She maintained a relationship with her children by visiting in between jobs and vacationing together.

She worked as a model to support herself which led to her 3-year stint with Joseph Papp’s Public Theater where she gained experience and training. She also met her future husband, Dean Compton, who was the production stage manager at the time.

In 1974, Madge starred in Conrack, with Jon Voight, and was nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for the role of Mrs. Scott. While the movie was still in theaters, she chose to move to California to pursue a career in Hollywood and increase her chances of obtaining an agent.

Her successful film and television career includes roles in Cornbread, Earl and Me, Roots, Trapper John, M.D. Coming to America, Gabriel’s Fire, and The Lion King,

She was nominated in 1977 for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role as Bell Reynolds in the TV series, Roots.

Beginning in 1983, she was nominated 3 years in a row for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Nurse Ernestine Shoop in Trapper John, M.D.

Her fourth Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress, resulted in a win for Gabriel’s Fire where she played Josephine Austin .

In 1994, she voiced the role of Sarabi, Simba’s mom, in the Lion King. This was her final film. Madge Sinclair died, after a 13-year battle with Leukemia, on December 20, 1995. She lives on in the memories of her loved ones and in the memorable roles she played on TV and film.
