Performed by Judy Garland and Martha Raye for 'The Judy Garland Show', taped January 14, 1964. These Great Ladies Of Laughter take us on a wonderful medley of Glen Miller standards, including: 'I've Heard that Song Before', 'Moonlight Cocktail', 'Pennsylvania 6-5000', 'Elmer's Tune', 'At Last', & 'St. Louis Blues March.' This is one of my favorite segments from Judy's show.
Judy had history with Martha Raye, both having been married to band leader, David Rose. She became engaged to David in May 1941, just 2 months after his divorce from Martha Raye. Despite planning a big wedding, the couple eloped to Las Vegas and married during the early hours of July 28th 1941, with her mother Ethel and her stepfather Will Gilmore present. Judy was 19 years old.
While there is some controversy with details - Judy being forced into an abortion - essentially, the couple separated in January 1943 when Judy realized that David was too weak to fight for her and stand up to MGM. Judy always needed ... & looked for ... a protector.
