Underage drinking convictions are all too common, especially around college campuses. People who have been arrested and convicted see these offenses as minor indiscretions that are chocked up to a learning experience with no harm/no foul. They plead guilty to the charges and move on with life.
However, these convictions often show up on background checks and can create an embarrassing situation with a prospective employer. While a underage drinking conviction may be common, a charge of public intoxication, ID falsification or other alcohol-induced behavior like lewdness or resisting arrest are common 'add-ons' to an underage drinking charge.
Over the years, we have counseled young people on these types of charges, and they are always surprised to see these convictions show up later in life. All charges stemming from an underage drinking conviction should be sealed together to avoid an embarrassing situation for something they thought was behind them.
